Storm Johannes shuts down ski lifts in Lindvallen

Storm Johannes has swept across northern Sweden, closing all ski lifts in Lindvallen. Families like Christoffer Edgren's, who planned a week of skiing, are forced into indoor activities such as playrooms and pools instead. With hurricane-force winds in the mountains, it's an unexpected shift for the holiday.

Storm Johannes reached the upper part of Sweden on December 27, 2025, bringing winds up to hurricane strength in the mountain areas. In the ski resort of Lindvallen, where Christoffer Edgren and his family arrived late the previous evening, all plans for skiing were put on hold. They had rented gear ready to pick up, but with the lifts shut down, it became impossible.

"We've taken over the playroom", says Edgren from the adventure pool's play area, where the family spent the day. Only the lowest runs for the smallest children remain open, while several trees have fallen across one of the lift systems. Many visitors have turned to alternative activities; both the pool and bowling hall are fully booked.

Edgren's family has a cabin in the area and an annual lift pass, but the rented equipment remains unused during the storm. "There should probably be a question of compensation, especially for those who bought lift passes for this week", he notes. Outside the windows, he sees brave skiers battling the weather. "It's fun seeing people out through the windows. Then you think they're crazy, until you have to go out yourself and become one of the crazies."

The storm has altered the holiday for many in Lindvallen, who now await better weather to resume skiing.

Storm Dave has hit Sweden's west coast with gusts up to 38.6 meters per second, causing power outages for tens of thousands, canceled trains and flights, and building damage. SMHI issued an orange warning until early Monday. Trafikverket and rescue services report fallen trees and closed bridges.

In the aftermath of Storm Dave's hurricane-force gusts battering Sweden's west coast over Easter Sunday, conditions are gradually improving on Monday. Fallen trees caused widespread road and rail disruptions, but key lines are reopening and power outages are dropping. The storm has moved toward Finland, though new risks loom in Skåne.
