Supreme Court justices report book income and travel reimbursements

The Supreme Court released annual financial disclosures showing justices earned significant income from books and teaching in 2025.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson led with more than $1.1 million from her memoir last year, bringing her total to roughly $4 million since publication in 2024. Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett also reported book earnings ranging from $88,000 to $849,000.

Several justices disclosed teaching income. Chief Justice John Roberts earned from New England Law in Boston. Justice Clarence Thomas taught at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., while Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh taught at Notre Dame Law School.

Gifts and travel reimbursements were limited. Jackson received a $2,500 painting. Sotomayor reported a trip to Kansas City and free tickets worth $4,333 in Puerto Rico. Thomas had travel expenses covered by the Hoover Institution.

Roberts was the only justice to report individual stock investments. Salaries remain set by law at $320,700 for the chief justice and $306,600 for associates.
