The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner directed Tata Trusts to defer its board meeting scheduled for May 16, 2026, and ordered an inquiry into complaints about the number of perpetual trustees at Sir Ratan Tata Trust.
The order followed complaints filed by Advocate Katyayani Agrawal on April 18, 2026, and by trustee Venu Srinivasan on April 28, 2026. The complaints alleged that three perpetual trustees at Sir Ratan Tata Trust violated Section 30A(2) of the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act, which limits perpetual trustees to one-fourth of the total board strength.
The Charity Commissioner Amogh S Kaloti stated that holding the meeting during the pending inquiry could lead to complications. The board meeting had originally been set for May 8 before being rescheduled to May 16 without a stated reason.
Tata Trusts described the order as ex-parte and said the 2025 amendment is prospective, so it does not affect prior appointments of perpetual trustees. The trust said it is examining the directions and noted that Srinivasan had acknowledged the meeting notices.
