The third season of Tell Me Lies picks up as the characters return to Baird College after Christmas break, with relationships immediately fracturing. Pippa and Wrigley reunite, but Pippa is also involved with Diana. Wrigley, still processing his brother's death from the previous season, forms an unexpected friendship with Bree. The pair bond during an MDMA-fueled encounter, share a sleepover at a bus stop, and enroll in photography classes together.
Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer explains the dynamic: “There are always those people in friend groups who spend a lot of time in the same space, but never alone... They are, by Season 3, in a lot of ways, the people who have dealt with the most serious trauma in their lives. I always like stories where people who are at rock bottom connect and find healing within each other.”
Bree grapples with the aftermath of her relationship with Oliver, and Evan discovers Oliver's role as the older man involved. Oliver returns for limited interactions, including a confrontation with Evan, which Oppenheimer describes as untapped potential from prior seasons.
Meanwhile, Lucy and Stephen briefly reconcile, but Stephen blackmails Lucy after she fails to confess about Evan, forcing her to record a video admitting she lied about a sexual assault. Overwhelmed, Lucy suffers a panic attack and begins dissociating. Oppenheimer notes Lucy's long-standing mental health issues since her father's death: “She starts to disassociate this season... You’re watching someone who doesn’t have the tools to deal with it.”
To cope, Lucy hooks up with Alex, the campus drug dealer who grew up in foster care with Bree. Their intense sex scene at the end of episode three marks a bold moment, with Oppenheimer praising actor Costa D’Angelo's vulnerable performance: “I thought they both did so well in that scene. I thought it was beautiful, and I haven’t seen anything like it before.”
The season introduces at least four new characters, expanding the toxic web of connections at Baird College.
