Portuguese wildcard Tiago Torres has advanced to the Estoril quarterfinals in his first ATP Tour event, defeating third seed Alejandro Tabilo without dropping a set.
The 24-year-old, ranked 374th, secured a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the world No. 30 on Wednesday. Torres had earlier beaten former top-20 player Nikoloz Basilashvili in the opening round.
"I have no idea what is happening. It’s insane. I was playing futures two weeks ago, and here I am," Torres said after the match. He described reaching the last eight as "unforgettable and truly emotional."
Torres will next face France’s Hugo Gaston in the quarterfinals. He has also reached the doubles quarterfinals alongside Joao Domingues after an all-Portuguese win in the round of 16.
The run has lifted Torres to a career-high ranking of 330.
