President Bola Tinubu has directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to investigate the activities of a purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council and related matters.
The directive requires the ICPC to conclude its probe and submit a comprehensive report to the President within 30 days. A statement from presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the alleged body was never established by the Federal Government and has no basis in law or any official instrument.
The statement identified one Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew as having presented himself as Director-General of the so-called PFIPC and falsely claimed to be a presidential appointee. Issues for investigation include forged appointment letters, use of false claims to obtain diplomatic support and visa facilitation, and the opening of multiple bank accounts in the names of purported government agencies using allegedly forged documents.
Tinubu ordered the commission to examine the conduct of the principal individual and collaborators, as well as any weaknesses in government procedures that enabled the scheme. All federal ministries, departments and agencies have been directed to provide relevant information to the ICPC upon request. The President said all persons found culpable will be treated in accordance with the law.
