Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Trai Essex has called for the team to explore signing free agent linebacker Bobby Wagner.
Essex made the comments Tuesday on his Snap Count podcast. He said Wagner could strengthen the inside linebacking group if Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson struggle early in the season.
Wagner, a second-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in 2012, has earned six First-team All-Pro selections and 10 Pro Bowl nods. Essex noted that Wagner remains productive despite turning 36 this season.
The suggestion comes amid existing connections. Steelers assistant head coach Joe Whitt Jr. and defensive pass game coordinator Jason Simmons both worked with Wagner during his time with the Washington Commanders.
