US President Trump plans an Oval Office address to tackle the Iran crisis, China tensions and the election fight.
Trump plans to deliver the address from the Oval Office on Thursday evening Eastern Time. The speech is expected to cover foreign policy and domestic political issues. The White House has not released the full agenda, but the timing follows Trump’s recent announcement reinstating a US naval blockade on Iran and reversing a proposed 20 per cent fee on cargo through the Strait of Hormuz, where he declared the US the “guardian” of the waterway.
Briefed congressional allies have described the broadcast as the most critical Oval Office address since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, warning that the time for complacency with China is over. During his second term Trump has used such addresses for key priorities, including a year-end speech in December and an April address focused on the Iran conflict.
The White House noted that these national addresses are typically reserved for major moments, amid low public support for the war and looming midterms.
