Tuju rejects state funeral, requests burial within 48 hours

Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has declared he wants to be buried within 48 hours of his death, with no state officials attending. He spoke at his family home in Rarieda Sub-County, Siaya County, amid ongoing disputes over his Karen property. Tuju identified two potential grave sites for his family to choose from.

Former Rarieda MP Raphael Tuju visited his family home in Siaya County's Rarieda Sub-County, where he outlined his burial preferences to relatives.

"I have told my people that when it comes to that, in the event that I die, I would like to be buried within 48 hours. I do not want any state officer to participate, pretending that they have anything to do with me," Tuju said. He added, "I have shown my family two spots where I can be laid, and it will be up to them to make the decision."

The remarks come amid a prolonged dispute over his multimillion-shilling Karen estate in Nairobi. In March, Tuju alleged police from a rapid response unit entered the property at 3am, removed his security, and took control without a court order.

On Tuesday, Tuju appeared at Kibera Law Courts, denying charges of giving false information to police about an alleged abduction. Senior Principal Magistrate Stella Atambo granted him a Ksh100,000 personal bond, with pre-trial proceedings set for April 15, 2026.

Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju resurfaced at his Karen home on Monday and recounted his 36-hour ordeal, but was detained by police shortly after a press conference. His lawyer Ndegwa Njiru and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka criticised the manner of his arrest. DCI head Amin Mohamed stated that Tuju had been at his home throughout and his family denied police access.

Kenya's High Court granted former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju a KSh200,000 anticipatory bond on March 24, 2026, preventing police arrest during investigations into claims he staged his own abduction. This follows his March 23 detention after resurfacing from a 36-hour disappearance, during which his health deteriorated, leading to ICU admission.
