The national unemployment rate stood at 8% in May 2026, one percentage point lower than the previous year, the DANE reported. The figure is the lowest for that month since 2001.
Between May 2025 and May 2026 the country added 956,000 new employed persons, bringing the total to 24.58 million people with work. The number of unemployed decreased by 203,000 people, to 2.14 million.
The employed population grew in all age groups, with the largest contribution from people aged 25 to 54 (553,000 new jobs) and young people aged 15 to 24 (284,000). Men took 593,000 positions and women 363,000.
The unemployment rate for women was 9.9%, the first time a single digit was recorded for May, according to DANE director Piedad Urdinola. Rural areas showed the best performance, with an unemployment rate of 5%.
