Universal Pictures has scheduled its romantic comedy 'The Catch,' starring Emma Stone and Chris Pine, for release on May 21, 2027. The two-hander film is directed by Dave McCary and marks a project that gained momentum after Pine joined Stone.
Universal Pictures announced a release date for 'The Catch' next spring, positioning the film for a theatrical debut on May 21, 2027. The studio, which signed Fruit Tree to a first-look deal in 2024 after acquiring the project, will oversee production through Senior EVP Erik Baiers and Director Jacqueline Garell. As first reported by Deadline, Chris Pine recently closed a deal to star opposite Emma Stone in the rom-com, which was fast-tracked once he committed for filming later this year. Pine had been in early talks for the lead role, following reports of Stone considering the script amid other options. A recent draft by writers Jen Statsky, known for 'Hacks,' and Travis Helwig convinced Stone to prioritize the film. The original spec script came from Patrick Kang and Michael Levin. Dave McCary directs, with producers including Shawn Levy and Dan Levine of 21 Laps, Michael H. Weber, and Stone, McCary, and Ali Herting through Fruit Tree. Robin Fisichella serves as executive producer. Plot details remain under wraps beyond its description as a two-hander rom-com.
