Commuters on Manila's LRT2 can now tap Visa cards or NFC devices at fare gates to pay for rides, eliminating the need for tickets or Beep cards. The contactless system launched on July 13 across all 13 stations.
The Light Rail Transit Line 2 runs from Recto in Manila to Antipolo in Rizal and serves more than 160,000 passengers daily. Visa completed the project in partnership with the Department of Transportation and Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation.
Passengers can use physical Visa debit or credit cards as well as supported smartphones and other NFC-enabled devices. The system charges the exact fare directly to the card.
This rollout forms part of efforts to introduce open-loop fare collection on public transport. Visa previously enabled similar payments on MRT3 and select bus routes in Cebu, Mandaue, and Bacolod.
