Vox deputy Antonio Martínez Nieto criticized trans laws this Wednesday during a debate in the Regional Assembly of Murcia. His remarks on communism and LGTBI rights drew reactions from other groups.
Martínez Nieto spoke during debate on a motion filed by Podemos and Izquierda Unida. The proposal called for protocols to support trans students and prevent transphobic bullying based on the national law promoted by Irene Montero.
The deputy stated that communism had moved trans behaviors from the catalog of disorders to that of human rights. He also demanded repeal of LGTBI laws and dismissed the need for the protocols, noting there are no transphobic bullying cases among over one thousand annual files in the region.
The motion was defeated by 27 votes against and 15 in favor. The Popular Party offered an alternative and the PSOE proposed applying the protocols next school year, an amendment that was accepted. María Marín of Podemos denounced the remarks on social media and warned of possible setbacks in rights.
