Wamalwa claims Ruto tried to lure him with ministry

Eugene Wamalwa, leader of DAP-K, claims President William Ruto is attempting to lure him into government by reviving the Justice Ministry for him to lead, but he has rejected it outright. He described this as a strategy to support Ruto in the 2027 elections. Wamalwa emphasized he will remain in opposition and pursue the presidency.

Eugene Wamalwa, leader of the Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K), has sparked debate after meeting Cooperatives Minister Wycliffe Oparanya, a key ally of President William Ruto. The next day, he claimed Ruto plans to revive the Justice Ministry to appoint him as its head, aiming to persuade him to join the government and back Ruto in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on a local radio station on Thursday, January 29, 2026, Wamalwa stated he cannot be swayed by any ministerial post, noting his over 10 years in cabinet, including as Justice Minister. "There are plans to recreate the Justice Ministry so I can be appointed to lead it. I previously served as Justice Minister. I was the last minister of that ministry. Under my leadership, the 2010 Constitution was born," he said.

Wamalwa also claimed Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka received a similar offer but refused. He said Ruto has lost the Mt. Kenya region and cannot rely on Nyanza, turning instead to him and Musyoka. According to intelligence reports, Ruto is projected to lose by about two million votes in the upcoming election, contrary to his claims of winning by a margin of two to three million.

Last week, Wamalwa attended an event with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula, who urged him to leave opposition and join the government, partnering with Oparanya and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi for Mulembe unity. Last year, Wamalwa rejected an offer for the Defence Ministry. Analyst Ken Ouma views this as typical election-season rumors emerging from all sides.
