Starting this Monday (1st), Angra dos Reis charges visitors a fee to fund infrastructure and environmental preservation. The measure, postponed since January, faces criticism from residents and tourism operators.
Angra dos Reis began charging the Sustainable Tourism Tax on Monday (1st) to visitors arriving in the municipality and the islands in the region, including Ilha Grande. The fee is collected through the Viva Angra portal or at totems installed in the city and on Ilha Grande.
Residents and workers must register in the system to issue a photo ID card and prove exemption. Tourists pay amounts that vary by visit type, starting at R$ 24.80 for day trips departing from Angra dos Reis.
The tax was postponed for five months and faces criticism over doubts about enforcement, use of funds and possible impact on tourist flow. Exemptions apply to residents, relatives up to the second degree, children up to 12 years old, seniors aged 60 and over, and people with disabilities.
