Banana from Comedian artwork stolen at centre Pompidou-Metz

The banana from Maurizio Cattelan's artwork Comedian has been stolen from the Centre Pompidou-Metz. The museum reported the disappearance on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

A security agent noticed the disappearance around 2 p.m. on Saturday. The museum announced it would file a complaint against person or persons unknown and condemned the act that undermines respect for exhibited works.

The centre stated that the value of the work lies in its certificate of authenticity and the protocol governing its presentation. The perishable element was replaced quickly and no irreversible damage was observed.

The Dimanche sans fin exhibition, which features Comedian, has been running since May 2025 and ends on January 25, 2027. The work exists in three editions and had been subject to prior incidents.
