Barcelona are nearing a deal to bring back Portugal defender Joao Cancelo on loan until the end of the season. The 31-year-old, who previously spent time on loan at the club in 2023-24, is set to return after 18 months with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Manager Hansi Flick has expressed optimism about the potential move, highlighting its fit with the team's current needs.
Barcelona are close to re-signing Portugal defender Joao Cancelo on a deal until the end of the season, according to manager Hansi Flick. The 31-year-old spent the 2023-24 season on loan at the Nou Camp from Manchester City and is now poised for a second spell after 18 months in Saudi Arabia with Al Hilal.
Flick initially planned to sign a centre-back this month, but with Ronald Araujo back available, the former Bayern Munich boss sees Cancelo as a versatile option. "I spoke with my staff and we think that when Ronald is back we have good alternatives at centre-back. Joao can play at both full-backs," Flick said.
The German coach emphasized the importance of smart signings amid financial constraints. "It’s not a done deal, but I’d be happy if it goes through. We talked about signing a centre-back, but this is a good option for these six months," he added. "We’ve had a situation these past two years where we have to be smart about the players we sign. We can’t spend billions. Our players are progressing. Our youngsters are developing, and we have faith in them. Now we have the opportunity to bring in a veteran. I’d appreciate it if he comes."
Cancelo, who has won league titles in Portugal, England, Germany, and Italy, hopes the move will bolster his chances of securing a spot in Portugal's squad for this summer’s World Cup. The potential signing comes as Barcelona prepare for upcoming matches, with Araujo's return providing defensive stability.
This development reflects Barcelona's strategy to blend experience with youth development while navigating budget limitations.
