A bus drove into a building in Liljeholmen in southern Stockholm shortly after 4 PM on Tuesday, injuring 16 people. The driver is seriously injured and was airlifted to hospital. Police are investigating the crash with no suspects at present.
The crash occurred during rush hour in Liljeholmen, where the bus, operated by Nobina, suddenly drove straight into a building facade despite a curve in the road. Police spokesperson Ola Österling stated that the bus driver is seriously injured and was airlifted to hospital. "The bus driver is seriously injured and he has been taken by ambulance helicopter to hospital," Österling said.
Region Stockholm reports that seven people were transported to hospital, two with serious injuries. An additional nine were taken to urgent care, totaling 16 injured. Österling added: "The road curves and the bus went straight into a facade there. So far, we have no information indicating any pedestrians, that is, anyone outside the bus or in the building, have been injured."
It is unclear how many passengers were on board. Police have initiated a preliminary investigation into careless driving and causing bodily harm, and the bus has been seized. Nobina states the bus is new and was safety-checked the previous evening, with no indications of a medical issue for the driver.
Traffic on the Tvärbanan light rail was halted in both directions at Liljeholmen after the crash but resumed during the evening. Police are now reviewing footage from the scene to determine the cause, with no suspects at present. This is the second serious bus accident in Stockholm in a short time, following a fatal crash on Östermalm two months ago.
