Portugal opened the scoring at the 58th minute with a goal by Gonçalo Guedes. Bruno Fernandes increased the lead at the 75th minute with a shot from outside the area. Lucas Cepeda pulled one back for Chile in the 90th minute with a long-range strike. The first half ended goalless, though it was marked by the red cards to Rafael Leao and Iván Román after a fight in the 45th minute. Lawrence Vigouroux prevented Portuguese goals on several occasions during the match. Chile coach Nicolás Córdova praised Vigouroux’s performance and the youth development process. “Lo de Lawrence is the example we want to have”, he said in a press conference. Nils Reichmuth made his Chile debut when he entered at the 80th minute. The Thun midfielder expressed his emotion: “Estaba como en un sueño, muy orgulloso por ser el primer partido”. Gabriel Suazo valued the team’s effort despite the loss.
