Clara Brugada proposes home office in Mexico City for 2026 World Cup matches

Mexico City's head of government, Clara Brugada, proposed suspending classes and promoting home office on days of 2026 World Cup matches at Estadio Banorte to reduce traffic. The initiative seeks coordination with the SEP and business sector, similar to COVID-19 pandemic measures. Agreements are awaited to avoid road congestion.

Clara Brugada, head of government of Mexico City, announced on March 30 measures to mitigate traffic impact during 2026 World Cup matches at Estadio Banorte in Monterrey.
"We have requested many areas, the Secretariat of Public Education to provide a definition that classes be suspended on those days," Brugada explained in a press conference.
The proposal includes businesses promoting work from home, as during the COVID-19 pandemic, to streamline mobility as fans head to the stadium.

According to the FIFA schedule, Estadio Banorte will host five matches:

  • Thursday, June 11 at 13:00: Mexico vs South Africa, inaugural match.
  • Wednesday, June 17 at 20:00: Uzbekistan vs Colombia.
  • Wednesday, June 24 at 21:00: Mexico vs an undefined European team.
  • Tuesday, June 30 at 20:00: Round of 32.
  • Sunday, July 5 at 20:00: Round of 16.

Brugada stated that "the ball is in the court" of the SEP and business coordinations to reach agreements.
These dates do not coincide with major school events in the 2025-2026 cycle, and the federal government may declare June 11 a holiday, though it is not yet official.
The goal is to prevent the city from being paralyzed by fan influx.
