Deputy Araya denies receiving payment in Belarusian plot

A Ciper report revealed a phone interception where Sergio Yáber mentions a $1.7 million payment to Republican deputy Cristián Araya in the Belarusian plot context. Araya dismissed the imputations as false and stated there is no investigation against him. Republican Party president Arturo Squella accused the outlet of trying to smear figures from his sector.

The Ciper report published on November 20, 2025, details phone interceptions by Carabineros' OS7, in which Puente Alto real estate developer Sergio Yáber, investigated for money laundering in the Belaz Movitec Belarusian consortium case, claims to have delivered $1.7 million to Republican deputy Cristián Araya. This occurred during the October 2025 discussion of the constitutional accusation against former minister Antonio Ulloa. According to police report N° 3145, Yáber contacted Araya to obtain information to help Ulloa, mentioning details on deputies Daniel Manouchehri and Daniella Cicardini, who pushed the accusation. However, Araya voted in favor of Ulloa's dismissal.

Araya, brother of Carolina Araya, chief of staff to presidential candidate José Antonio Kast, responded on X: “The imputations in the article are false. There is no investigation against me nor have I been notified of any judicial measure or action in this regard. Regarding the vote on the constitutional accusation against former minister Ulloa, as publicly recorded, I voted in favor of his dismissal”. He added he would collaborate with justice if required.

Arturo Squella, elected senator and Republican Party president, defended Araya: “The sort of denunciation in that report is a bit lame when one reviews the constitutional accusation vote”. Squella suggested the report aims to “smear someone related to our sector” and did not rule out internal disciplinary actions if more evidence emerges, though he currently dismisses them.

Socialist deputies criticized harshly. Manouchehri said: “Like a sewer rat, deputy Cristián Araya would have delivered information to a corruption network... Did candidate Kast know about this?”. Cicardini emphasized: “This shows these operations were not only political in origin but may have even involved money to damage our image. This must be thoroughly investigated”.

The Belarusian plot involves alleged bribes and judicial favors linked to Ángela Vivanco and her partner Gonzalo Migueles.

Skeptical comments question the party's integrity, and the topic trended amid high engagement from diverse accounts including deputies and journalists.
