Building on prior trailers and promos, Disney showcased the opening 17 minutes of Star Wars film 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Director Jon Favreau presented the action-packed sequence starring Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin and Grogu, ahead of the May 22 theatrical release.
Jon Favreau unveiled the footage at CinemaCon for movie theater owners, marking the first Star Wars big-screen outing since 2019's 'The Rise of Skywalker.' The sequence opens with yellow text on the New Republic's fragile state post-Empire. A council meeting turns violent as the leader shoots a dissenter amid threats from pirates and Imperial remnants in the Outer Rim.
Din Djarin (Mando) and Grogu infiltrate Empire sympathizers on a snowy planet, battling Snowtroopers with guns, knives, and flamethrowers. They destroy AT-ATs, hijack an AT-ST, and escape icy cliffs to take out the Imperial leader.
Post-mission, Mando and Zeb Orrelios (from 'Star Wars Rebels') brief Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver), a New Republic officer. Despite her rebuke for the kill without intel, she tasks them with rescuing Rotta the Hutt (Jeremy Allen White, Jabba's son) from rivals to find missing Commander Coin. They blast off in a new ship.
Favreau highlighted Star Wars' cinematic roots, noting over 49 minutes of expanded IMAX aspect ratio using practical sets, stop-motion, and miniatures. Tickets go on sale April 17.
