A dog control order has been issued after two horses suffered tendon injuries from repeated chases by a dog in their field. The owner is sharing her experience to inform others about new legal powers.
Kirstie McPherson, who rents a field in Devon, said her home-bred two-year-old horse and its dam were both injured after a dog jumped into the enclosure. Cameras she installed captured the dog chasing the animals, leading to the injuries.
Devon & Cornwall Police issued the order under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Act, which took effect on 18 March. The order requires the dog to remain under control at all times and its home to be secured against escape.
McPherson said she spoke to the dog’s owners without result before learning via social media that such incidents now constitute a crime. “I’m doing this to highlight to people what steps they can take to protect their animals,” she said.
A police spokesperson confirmed that breach of the order could lead to prosecution. British Horse Society safety team manager Des Payne noted the legislation provides additional powers but said its full impact remains to be seen.
