تحتوي المنازل الأمريكية حالياً على 24 جهازاً إلكترونياً في المتوسط، مما يساهم في وصول مستويات النفايات الإلكترونية العالمية إلى أرقام قياسية.

أفاد تقرير "مرصد النفايات الإلكترونية العالمي" التابع للأمم المتحدة بأن حجم النفايات الإلكترونية عالمياً وصل إلى 62 مليون طن في عام 2022، بزيادة قدرها 82 في المائة منذ عام 2010. وهذا الحجم ينمو بوتيرة أسرع بخمس مرات من قدرات إعادة التدوير حول العالم. وينتج الأمريكيون ما بين 46 إلى 48 رطلاً من النفايات الإلكترونية للفرد سنوياً، ويحتوي الكثير منها على معادن قيمة مثل الذهب والنحاس التي ينتهي بها المطاف غالباً في مكبات النفايات.
