ESPN docuseries features top ski racers before 2026 Olympics

ESPN is launching a five-episode docuseries titled "On the Edge: World Cup Ski Racing," spotlighting prominent alpine skiers like Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn ahead of the Milan Cortina Olympics. The series begins with three segments on Friday and explores the personal and professional challenges of the World Cup circuit. It aims to inspire new fans and participants in the sport.

The docuseries provides an intimate look at the lives of elite ski racers as they prepare for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina, scheduled from February 6 to 22. Featuring American stars Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn, the production includes Swiss racer Marco Odermatt and Brazilian representative Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, known for his entertaining persona.

The premiere episodes focus on Shiffrin and her fiancé, Norwegian skier Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, as they recover from serious injuries and support one another. Later installments highlight other athletes, such as New Zealand's Alice Robinson, Italy's Sofia Goggia, Federica Brignone, and Dominik Paris, as well as Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen.

The final episode, airing on April 10 and titled "The World's Stage," centers on Swiss skier Camille Rast's reflections on a tragic New Year's fire at a bar in Crans-Montana. It also reviews Olympic performances, including Vonn's comeback at age 41 following a partial knee replacement.

Directed by filmmaker Pat Dimon, the series delves into the rigors of World Cup racing, from constant travel and injury tolls to the mental demands of competing at the highest level. "Growing up a lifelong skier in Vermont, I learned that what matters most often happens away from the gates and finish line," Dimon said. "'On the Edge' is about seeing past the polished surface and dropping into the real line of World Cup racing—the grind of travel, the toll of injuries, the pressure, and the mindset it takes to be and stay at that level."

Sophie Goldschmidt, president and CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard, praised the project for its potential impact. "This kind of storytelling is so important to the future of our sport," she stated. "'On the Edge' gives ski racing an even bigger platform and broader reach—and that's how you inspire participation. We hope this series encourages more kids to fall in love with ski racing and dream of becoming the next Mikaela Shiffrin, Lindsey Vonn or Ryan Cochran-Siegle."

The series premieres on the ESPN app and ESPN on Disney+, offering viewers a deeper understanding of the athletes' journeys toward Olympic gold.
