Sébastien Vaniček, co-writer and director of Evil Dead Burn, trimmed one scene to secure an R rating instead of NC-17. The Warner Bros. horror film opened in U.S. theaters on July 10.
Vaniček told SlashFilm that he adjusted a particular sequence to make it less raw. The original version was colder and more difficult for audiences to bear, he said.
The scene remains intense and brutal in the final cut. Vaniček noted that the changes were minor and preserved the core of the moment.
Producer Robert Tapert described the story as centering on a French woman in a troubled marriage in America whose in-laws prove to be from hell. The film continues the franchise that began with Sam Raimi's 1981 original.
