The Royal Mint has unveiled a commemorative coin honoring Queen frontman Freddie Mercury to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1985 Live Aid concert. The coin features a portrait of the musician, his signature, and design elements inspired by his iconic performance. Variations are available for purchase, with proceeds supporting a charity founded in his memory.
Coin Design and Features
The commemorative coin showcases a portrait of Freddie Mercury along with his signature. The perimeter features a silver-studded pattern resembling the belt he wore during the 1985 Live Aid concert, and it includes a depiction of his four-octave vocal range on a musical stave. The first coin was struck by Mercury's sister, Kashmira Bulsara, who commented, “As Freddie died young, he didn’t get the chance of being awarded a royal medal for his talents in the music world. So to have a royal coin this way is wonderful and very fitting. The coin perfectly captures his passion and the joy he brought to millions through his music. I think the design is very impressive and they managed to catch the most iconic pose of Freddie, which is so recognizable worldwide.”
Availability and Pricing
The Royal Mint offers multiple versions of the coin, including a standard uncirculated version available in color, as well as gold and silver proof editions. Prices range from £18.50 for the standard coin to £9,350 for premium versions. A special gold proof coin will be donated to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, an AIDS charity established in Mercury's memory, and auctioned at a later date.
