Housing starts in Bogotá reach two-decade record

In 2025, Bogotá recorded 49,883 housing starts, the highest since 2001, up 11.3% from 2024. Sixty-one percent were social and priority interest housing. The Habitat Secretariat highlights the impact on families and job creation.

Despite lower investment dynamism in the construction sector during 2025, Bogotá saw a significant recovery in housing starts. According to the Habitat Secretariat, 49,883 units were initiated, exceeding the previous high from 2001 and marking an 11.3% increase from the prior year.

District Habitat Secretary Vanessa Velasco emphasized the social benefits: “The real impact is on families. It is measured in every home that stops paying rent. In the child who grows up in a stable place. In the patrimony that begins to be built generation after generation. In a challenging national context, Bogotá demonstrates that when social housing becomes a priority, the city advances, generates employment, and reduces gaps”.

Of these starts, 61% were Social Interest Housing (VIS) and Priority Interest Housing (VIP), indicating a focus on affordability. Additionally, 22,692 building permits for new housing units were approved, a 24% rise from 2024.

The entity also noted that each public peso invested in housing generates up to 2.4 pesos in economic return, highlighting the local multiplier effect. This trend contrasts with national investment challenges but underscores the local commitment to housing as a development driver.
