The incoming government of Abelardo De La Espriella issued a statement rejecting the tax reform presented by Gustavo Petro's administration. According to the document, Colombians should not bear the consequences of prior fiscal decisions and opposed new taxes affecting families and the productive sector.
The DIAN clarified that the project does not tax the basic basket or housing. It includes raising VAT to 19 percent on alcoholic beverages, betting, and international online purchases, plus a consumption tax on tickets over 500,000 pesos for public events.
De La Espriella will take office on August 7 and will focus policy on economic growth, private investment and control of public spending. The statement noted that the solution cannot be to keep taxing those who generate employment.
