Jannik Sinner praises Kimi Antonelli after maiden F1 win

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner gave a special shoutout to fellow countryman Kimi Antonelli during his Indian Wells victory speech. Antonelli had just secured his first Formula 1 win at the Chinese Grand Prix with Mercedes. Sinner highlighted the significance for Italy.

Jannik Sinner, the 24-year-old Italian who won the Indian Wells Open, took a moment in his acceptance speech to celebrate Kimi Antonelli's achievement. Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, claimed his maiden Formula 1 grand prix victory at the Chinese Grand Prix, becoming the second-youngest winner there. He converted pole position into the win, holding off teammate George Russell and the Ferraris of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Sinner said: “It has nothing to do with tennis, but it has been a special day for Italy because I'm a huge Formula 1 fan and having a very, very young Italian Kimi, bringing Italy back home on the top. It's amazing, so thanks. Thanks Kimi. Thanks Formula 1 and see you all next year.” Antonelli, emotional after crossing the finish line, reflected: “What an incredible day! This win is a fulfilment of one of the dreams I’ve had ever since I first drove a go-kart.” He thanked his family and teams at Lauda Drive and Morgan Drive. During the race, Antonelli lost a position off the start but fought back. He managed a safety car restart on the Hard compound tires, ensuring no threats from behind. The victory capped the first double-header of the season, with Mercedes preparing for Japan.
