Johannesburg metro police warn against alcohol in public parks

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department has issued a stern warning against consuming alcohol in city-owned parks and public spaces during the festive season. Officers are stepping up patrols to enforce a zero-tolerance policy amid holiday gatherings. Transgressors face fines or arrests, with exceptions only for licensed events.

As South Africans gear up for the Day of Goodwill on December 26, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) is reminding the public of strict rules prohibiting alcohol in municipal parks and open spaces. The department states that no person may consume, brew, store, or sell alcohol in these areas, a measure aimed at maintaining order during peak holiday periods when families often gather for braais and relaxation.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla emphasized the city's zero-tolerance stance. “JMPD officers and Park Rangers are authorised to confiscate any alcohol found in these areas,” he said. “Transgressors can face a fine starting from R500 under the Municipal By-Laws and in case of public disturbance or non-compliance, potential arrests. The only exception is for specific events that have applied for and have been granted temporary liquor license and a formal event permit from the city.”

To support this, officers have intensified visibility, law enforcement, and patrols, focusing on curbing drunk driving and monitoring entertainment hotspots. This comes at a time when alcohol consumption in public rises, potentially leading to disturbances.

In a related caution, the Free State Department of Health has urged people not to prioritize alcohol over health this festive season. Health MEC Monyatso Mahlatsi highlighted risks for those with chronic conditions, noting that disrupted routines from late nights and travel can cause missed medications, undoing treatment progress and causing complications.
