King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have announced their new album Alien Metal, set for release later in the summer. The record marks the band's first foray into EDM. A new single, Level 5, is accompanied by a video directed by Hayden Somerville.
The Melbourne sextet shared details of the album on July 8. It follows a 13-month break since their previous studio LP, Phantom Island. The band recorded the project using a large modular synthesizer called Nathan, operated by all six members during live performances.
Stu Mackenzie described how the instrument changed his approach. He said it rewired his brain and led him to relearn music from scratch. Joey Walker noted his background in electronic music and expressed frustration at prior technical limits.
The announcement coincides with the group's upcoming three-night run at Forest Hills Stadium in New York next month. The final show there is billed as a rave performance, followed by another at Brooklyn's Under the K Bridge Park. P(Doom) will release the album.
