KZN disaster teams on high alert after severe weather warning

The KwaZulu-Natal Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department has activated high alert for all provincial disaster management teams following a severe weather warning. The South African Weather Service predicts thunderstorms with hail, heavy rain and strong winds in key districts. Officials warn of potential disruptions to routes and infrastructure damage.

On Sunday, the South African Weather Service issued a warning for severe thunderstorms affecting eThekwini, uMgungundlovu and Ugu districts in KwaZulu-Natal. The forecast includes a high chance of hail, heavy downpours likely to cause localised flooding, and strong winds.

In response, the KwaZulu-Natal Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Department placed all provincial disaster management teams on high alert. This measure aims to prepare for possible impacts on major routes and infrastructure.

Department spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila highlighted the risks, stating: “It is also expected that it could lead to the damage of both public and private infrastructure. Residents are urged to ensure that they follow all safety protocols and ensure that they follow all instructions from disaster officials.”

The weather service's update for November 22-23 anticipates isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers across most of the country, with more widespread effects in the south-east on Sunday. An orange level 5 warning signals severe thunderstorms, alongside yellow level 4 and 2 alerts for similar conditions.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay vigilant as the weather could disrupt daily activities and pose safety hazards.
