Mashatile affirms Ramaphosa's position amid ANC removal rumors

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has dismissed speculation about a plot to remove ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa at the upcoming National General Council. Speaking in Cape Town, Mashatile stated that Ramaphosa will complete his term. Party leaders echo calls for unity and focus on renewal rather than leadership battles.

Speculation has intensified ahead of the African National Congress's National General Council (NGC), scheduled for 8 to 11 December in Gauteng, regarding an alleged plot to oust President Cyril Ramaphosa. On 4 December, during a session with parliamentary journalists in Cape Town, Deputy President Paul Mashatile firmly addressed the rumors, declaring, “The President is going nowhere.”

Mashatile confirmed that Ramaphosa had raised concerns during a recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting about some members plotting his removal or resignation. He noted that the NEC discussed the matter and resolved that “such a move will not be supported.” This stance aligns with ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula's earlier comments, where he described the stories as “planted by forces from within and outside who are hell-bent on disintegrating the ANC.” Mbalula urged the party to prioritize renewal over leadership disputes, especially with the next national elective conference set for 2027.

Reports from Sunday World suggest the plot involves deputy ministers Mondli Gungubele and Joe Phaahla, who were demoted during the formation of the Government of National Unity and have denied the allegations. The Sunday Times indicates the ANC is investigating these claims. Support for Ramaphosa has come from the party's Youth League, Women’s League, and Veterans League, all issuing statements condemning the supposed plot.

Mashatile emphasized that the NGC, which occurs midway between elective conferences to review resolution implementation, will not address leadership issues. Instead, the current leadership is focusing on local government challenges ahead of the 2026 municipal elections. As deputy president, Mashatile is positioned as a potential successor in 2027, though competition is expected.

“We are closing ranks,” Mashatile added, calling on ANC members to unite against divisive forces.
