German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham hours after his appointment. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continue comprehensive support for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia.
The German government said Merz and Burnham expressed a desire to continue cooperation between the two countries. They also intend to advance the German-British friendship treaty of Kensington.
Merz had previously congratulated Burnham publicly and issued an invitation. Burnham had already spoken with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul congratulated his new British counterpart Ed Miliband and hopes for a continuation of the E3 format.
