With less than three weeks until Spring Training, the Mets are finalizing their bullpen ahead of the new season. On Wednesday, they agreed to a one-year contract with Luis García, a right-handed reliever who has pitched for eight teams over 13 years.
García demonstrated effectiveness last season, posting a 3.42 ERA across 58 appearances split between the Los Angeles Angels, Washington Nationals, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Despite approaching 39 later this month, he maintained velocity, averaging 96.9 mph on his signature sinker, paired with a sweeper and splitter.
In New York, García is expected to pitch in front of closer Devin Williams and setup man Luke Weaver. The bullpen also features left-handers A.J. Minter and Brooks Raley. Right-hander Huascar Brazobán, out of Minor League options, is a strong contender for a spot but will face competition.
This signing aims to address the Mets' bullpen, which ranked 15th in MLB with a 3.85 ERA last year. The loss of Edwin Díaz to the Dodgers in free agency presents a challenge, but the additions of Williams, Weaver, and now García offer hope for improvement.
