The Secretaría Anticorrupción y Buen Gobierno has imposed a fine of 42 million 849 thousand 95 pesos on the Federación Mexicana de Futbol for irregularities in the handling of personal data through the Fan ID system.
The penalty stems from two main violations. The FMF did not adequately inform fans that photographs for the Fan ID constitute sensitive biometric data. It also failed to obtain explicit written consent, relying only on a checkbox on a website.
The authority stated that this omission prevented data subjects from understanding the real scope of the processing of their information. The fine took into account the severity of the breaches, the sensitive nature of the data and the FMF’s economic capacity based on its 2024 tax declaration.
The Fan ID was implemented after violent incidents at the Corregidora Stadium on March 5, 2022. The federation may challenge the resolution through the corresponding legal channels.
