Economy secretary marcelo ebrard announced that committees from mexico and the united states will meet on may 27 in mexico city to start formal conversations on the t-mec review.
The announcement came during the el financiero forum held on may 13 2026 in mexico city. Ebrard said the goal is to reduce trade uncertainty without renegotiating the entire treaty.
The official ruled out a scenario where the three countries automatically extend the t-mec for 16 years on july 1. He noted that mexico will sign an updated agreement with the european union on may 22 to raise exports to 30 billion dollars by 2030.
Business leaders at the forum agreed that mexico retains advantages due to its proximity to the united states and its logistics integration. Gustavo tomé velázquez of fibra plus said the country's position is strengthened despite tensions.
