Mexico City airport taxi drivers protest space allocation ahead of 2026 World Cup

A group of taxi drivers from six concession companies protested on November 26 at Mexico City's International Airport (AICM) demanding transparency in space allocation for sales. The demonstration takes place as the airport undergoes remodeling for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Protesters claim not all companies are being considered in the permit expansions.

On Wednesday, November 26, taxi drivers from six concession companies blocked access points at Terminal 2 of the AICM, which is being remodeled to handle increased traffic for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Under the Navy's administration, the airport plans to expand permits for taxi operators ahead of the tournament, whose ticket presale has already started. However, protesters allege a lack of fairness in distributing sales points.

Homero Pantoja, representative of Protaxi, stated: “Based on the feasibility study, let there be a fair, equal distribution according to the rights of service providers”. Another taxi leader added: “They don't allow us to have the sales points that big companies do. Six of us are in disadvantaged conditions”. They clarified they are not against competition but demand it be fair.

Banners at Terminal 2 called for fair treatment and loyal competition. The AICM warned on X: consider the presence of protesters and anticipate your departure if taking a flight that day. This protest highlights tensions in preparations for the global event, where Mexico will co-host with other nations.
