Michel-Édouard Leclerc warned Donald Trump of the consequences of tariff threats on French wines during the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains.
Appearing on CNews on Monday, the head of the strategic committee of E. Leclerc centers said Donald Trump should pay attention. He noted that 4000 American companies operate in France and that Europe is the world’s largest market.
Donald Trump threatened to impose 100 % customs duties on French wines and champagnes if Paris did not drop its 3 % GAFA tax. « I have asked Emmanuel Macron not to tax American companies », he stated in the New York Post.
Emmanuel Macron replied from the G7 summit that this digital tax is part of European law. The American market absorbs one fifth of French wine exports, worth more than 2 billion dollars a year.
