NDLEA seizes 5.3 million kg of illicit drugs worth N1.5 trillion

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has seized more than 5.3 million kilograms of illicit drugs valued at N1.5 trillion and secured 5,225 convictions over 18 months.

Brigadier General Buba Marwa, the NDLEA chairman, announced the figures on Friday during events marking the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Abuja. The agency dismantled several major syndicates, including the Amadi Simon cartel in cooperation with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and authorities in Greece, France and Switzerland.

Marwa also reported the disruption of a transnational methamphetamine network that led to the arrest of a 63-year-old suspect, Innocent Anochili, along with three Mexican nationals and six Nigerians. A clandestine laboratory was uncovered in Tapa village, Oyo State, resulting in further arrests.

In addition to enforcement, the NDLEA ran 6,645 sensitisation programmes that reached nearly five million people and provided treatment to 13,508 individuals at its 31 rehabilitation centres. Marwa credited President Bola Tinubu and international partners for supporting the operations.
