The indie horror film Obsession has reached a major milestone, grossing over 400 million dollars worldwide after two months in theaters.
The movie has earned 403 million dollars in total ticket sales, with 245 million dollars coming from North America and 157 million dollars from international markets. Produced on a budget of 750,000 dollars, it was directed by YouTuber Curry Barker and acquired by Focus Features for 14 million dollars at last year’s Toronto Film Festival.
It opened in May with 17 million dollars domestically and continued to build momentum through strong word-of-mouth, especially among Gen Z audiences. Over the July 4th holiday weekend, the film added 5.3 million dollars in the United States and 12 million dollars overseas.
Jason Blum, who produced Obsession through Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, noted the appeal of left-of-center horror to younger viewers. A similar success story is the film Backrooms, which has grossed 347 million dollars worldwide to date.
