Ogden prepares to host world men's curling championships

Ogden, Utah, is gearing up to welcome the LGT World Men’s Curling Championships from March 27 to April 4 at the Ice Sheet at Weber County Sports Complex. The event will feature 66 athletes from 13 nations, many of whom competed in the recent Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Visit Ogden is leading preparations to ensure a smooth experience for teams and spectators alike.

The LGT World Men’s Curling Championships will bring competitors from Canada, China, Czechia, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Norway, Poland, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States to Ogden. These 66 athletes, along with coaches, support staff, family members, and World Curling officials, represent a global gathering following the heightened interest in curling from the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

Visit Ogden President and CEO Sara Toliver emphasized the event's significance in an interview with the Standard-Examiner. “This is a world event,” she said. “We will be hosting (13) different countries and are super excited having those teams here, especially coming off of the Olympics and the increased interest in curling that seems to have been generated this year.”

The tournament emerged from a partnership between Visit Ogden and the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation after the original host country withdrew due to conflicts. Visit Ogden has been preparing for nearly a year, despite the shorter lead time. Their efforts focus on off-ice logistics, including welcoming teams, coordinating transportation with Utah Transit Authority (UTA), and securing parking and security support from Weber State University.

Public sessions are scheduled daily except the opening day at 9 a.m., 2 p.m., and 7 p.m., with festivities around the Ice Sheet open to all. A community send-off celebration is planned for April 3 at the Monarch during the First Friday Art Stroll. The event coincides with spring breaks for Ogden and Weber School Districts, and day sessions are free for children under 12.

Toliver highlighted the opportunity for locals: “There are lots of opportunities for people to come and experience curling in their own backyard.” She also noted its role as a test run for the 2034 Winter Olympics in the region. “This is a great opportunity for our community to come out and really get to take advantage of having this event here and show these athletes from around the world some support,” she added.
