The Edmonton Oilers secured a 3-2 overtime victory over the Ottawa Senators on October 21, 2025, snapping a three-game losing streak. Jake Walman scored the game-winning goal in his season debut, while rookie Isaac Howard notched his first NHL goal. Goaltender Stuart Skinner earned his 100th career win in the process.
Game Overview
The Edmonton Oilers (3-3-1) faced the Ottawa Senators (2-5-1) at Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata, Ontario, on Tuesday night. Both teams were struggling, with Edmonton coming off three straight losses and Ottawa dropping four of their last five. The game remained tight throughout, ending with Edmonton's overtime triumph.
First Period
Edmonton opened the scoring on the power play with 3:29 left. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins passed from behind the net to Connor McDavid, who fired a one-timer over Linus Ullmark's left shoulder for his first goal of the season. Shots were tied at 6-6 after the period.
Second Period
Just 49 seconds in, Isaac Howard scored his first NHL goal at age 21 years and 205 days. McDavid forced a turnover, Leon Draisaitl fed Howard in the slot, and he beat Ullmark five-hole for a 2-0 lead. Stuart Skinner made a key sprawling save on David Perron's 2-on-0 opportunity. Ottawa outshot Edmonton 11-6 in the period, leading 17-12 overall.
"That's obviously super cool," Howard said. "It's gonna be a moment I'll remember forever, and to have those two guys in on the goal is pretty special."
Third Period
Ottawa rallied quickly. Dylan Cozens scored 13 seconds in on a carried-over power play, walking in and sniping blocker side to make it 2-1. Thomas Chabot tied it at 2-2 at 1:49 with a point shot through traffic. Edmonton outshot Ottawa 9-3 in the period, holding a 21-20 edge overall, but the game went to overtime.
Head coach Kris Knoblauch noted, "They capitalized on the power play, and they made a nice play... After it was 2-2, we responded and played pretty well after that."
Overtime
In extra time, Walman blasted a slap shot on the power play with 2:36 remaining, beating Ullmark under the crossbar after a faceoff win by Matt Savoie and pass from Mattias Ekholm. It was Walman's first game back from injury.
"I'm just happy to be back, and we've got a great team," Walman said. "I thought we played a good game and we were fortunate to win it."
Skinner made 19 saves in the win, while Ullmark stopped 22 of 25 shots. The victory also marked Adam Henrique's 1,000th career game.
"It's great momentum going back home," Skinner added.
The Oilers next host the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.
