PTA condemns exam hall incident at MAAUN and pledges support

The Parents Teachers Association of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria in Kano has apologised for a disturbance at an exam hall and condemned the involved parties. The incident, which occurred on October 24, 2025, involved unauthorised access that disrupted proceedings. The PTA urged legal action against those responsible to protect academic standards.

On October 24, 2025, a confrontation unfolded at the entrance of an examination hall at the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) in Kano, involving Mr Bashir Hussain Adamu and his student niece. The Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of MAAUN issued a statement on October 27, 2025, signed by Chairman Alhaji Mustapha Balarabe, tendering an unreserved apology to the university's management, faculty, and staff.

The PTA described the behaviour as 'unacceptable and condemnable,' stating: 'The behaviour exhibited by Mr Bashir Hussain Adamu and his student niece was utterly condemnable and falls short of the standards we uphold as parents and as an institution.' They alleged the individuals unlawfully entered the venue without authorisation, breaching examination regulations and disrupting the assessment.

Reacting to a circulating social media video, the PTA called it 'a deliberate act of manipulation and blackmail,' edited to misrepresent facts and discredit the lecturer and university. They labelled it 'unethical and an assault on the dignity of educators,' urging MAAUN to pursue legal redress to prevent defamation or harassment.

The association commended the university's leadership under Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo for its professionalism and moral values. 'Over the last decade, since the establishment of MAAUN campuses in Niger and now in Nigeria, we have witnessed consistent growth, quality teaching, and moral excellence. We, as parents, have every reason to be proud of MAAUN and its leadership,' Balarabe added.

The PTA criticised a security lapse that allowed the breach and called for accountability. They distanced themselves from the indiscipline, reminding parents: 'The PTA distances itself from such indiscipline and reminds parents that they are not permitted to access examination halls or restricted areas. Any engagement must take place through the university’s administrative offices.'

Reaffirming support, the PTA pledged collaboration to promote discipline and excellence, appealing for faculty forgiveness and promising better parent awareness. 'No individual should weaponise social media or undermine the authority of lecturers with impunity,' the statement stressed. 'The MAAUN PTA remains committed to upholding a disciplined and respectful learning environment.'
