Sam Burns hit the same tree with consecutive shots on the 11th hole during the third round of the 2026 Memorial Tournament, leading to a double bogey.
Burns arrived at the par-5 11th hole early Sunday at Muirfield Village one under on his round and seven under overall. He had lost his tee shot to the right and faced a tree 10 yards ahead in the rough. His first punch shot struck the tree and bounced back. The second attempt clipped a branch and landed in the creek, resulting in a penalty and a score of seven on the hole. Burns recovered with two birdies to close the round with a 71. He began the final round in solo third place at seven under, five shots behind leader J.T. Poston.
