SMHI warns of snow and wind on New Year's

Sweden faces stormy weather at the turn of the year with snowfall and strong winds, especially in central and eastern regions. Meteorologist Therese Fougman from SMHI warns of potentially troublesome conditions in Östergötland and Gotland, where an orange warning has already been issued. The warnings apply from New Year's Eve into the new year.

Sweden's Christmas weather has been mixed, with storms in some areas and chilly sunshine in others. Attention now turns to New Year's weather, particularly in Östergötland and Gotland. Meteorologist Therese Fougman at SMHI says: “It looks like there could be stormy weather again at the start of the year. It's unclear if it will be as troublesome here.”

On Gotland, a new storm has already affected ferry traffic, and SMHI has issued an orange warning that remains in effect until Tuesday evening. After that, conditions are expected to calm. Broader warnings cover central Sweden: an orange alert for snowfall combined with wind is set for southern Norrland's coastal areas from 11 a.m. on January 1 to 6 a.m. on January 2. Up to 40 centimeters of snow could fall within a day, and SMHI advises: “Do not venture out on the roads unnecessarily or prepare to be stationary. Traffic conditions may be difficult due to drifting snow, slippery roads, poor visibility, and snow drift.”

A yellow warning applies to northeastern Svealand and southern Jämtland on Thursday, with snowfall lasting a few hours in the morning. Stockholm's area will be windy with southerly winds. Already on New Year's Eve, a minor snowfall will pass from Jämtland toward eastern Svealand, Öland, and Gotland. These warnings signal a turbulent start to 2026, though no sources specify exact temperatures or long-term forecasts.
