Three elderly people died on Sunday in Gironde, probably due to the extreme heat, according to the department prefect.
The victims, aged 80 to 95, died at their homes in the communes of Cenon, Saint-Médard-en-Jalles and Saint-Jean-d'Illac, on the outskirts of Bordeaux.
Prefect Sophie Brocas said on Sunday evening to France 3 Aquitaine: "Today, we unfortunately deplore in Gironde three deaths of elderly people, between 80 and 95 years old, which the emergency services for now attribute to this heatwave".
The department has been placed under red alert since Sunday noon, with temperatures expected to reach 43°C from Monday to Wednesday, according to Météo-France.
