Thunder, Pistons lead updated 2025-26 NBA midseason grades

Updating our January 19 midseason assessment, the Oklahoma City Thunder (37-8) and Detroit Pistons (32-10) continue to top NBA evaluations at the season's halfway mark. New injuries and recent games test the Thunder, while the Pistons solidify their Eastern lead with elite defense.

Building on our midway assessment from January 19—when the Thunder held a 35-8 record and the Pistons were 30-10—the latest grades reflect progress through at least 41 games. Oklahoma City, still the West's best at 37-8, shows vulnerabilities after injuries like Jalen Williams' hamstring strain and a recent 6-6 stretch, yet Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's play and top defense keep them as defending champions and West favorites. Power rankings from The Oklahoman place them No. 1, ahead of the Nuggets (29-15) and Spurs (30-14).

Detroit (32-10) maintains its Eastern dominance with a 5.5-game lead, winning eight of their last 10 behind Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Ausar Thompson, and Tobias Harris. Their defense earns top marks despite offensive questions.

Key updates include the Clippers' surge from 6-21 to 14-3 in their last 17, eyeing .500. The Warriors falter post-Jimmy Butler's ACL tear, and the Knicks continue to struggle. Recent parity-showing games: 76ers 128-122 OT over Rockets (Maxey 36p/10a), Bulls 120-115 over Timberwolves, Spurs 126-109 over Jazz (Wembanyama 26p/13r/5b). With the February 5 trade deadline nearing, the league remains competitive.
