Trade speculation intensifies for Canucks captain Quinn Hughes

Despite assurances that Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes is not available for trade, speculation continues about potential deals involving the superstar defenseman. Reports highlight possible packages from teams like the Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Canucks are listening to offers on most veterans, fueling broader trade rumors.

The Vancouver Canucks have become a focal point in the NHL rumor mill after a front office memo indicated they are open to offers on nearly all veterans, regardless of contract length. However, Elliotte Friedman clarified that Quinn Hughes, the 26-year-old captain signed through 2026-27, is not part of that group. Despite this, writers and podcasters have proposed hypothetical trades for the generational defenseman, who is reportedly committed to the team for now.

One scenario involves the Detroit Red Wings sending Lucas Raymond to Vancouver. Raymond, a rising star, recorded a career-high 31 goals in 2023-24 and 80 points last season, and has eight goals and 27 points in 24 games this season, on pace for 90 points. He headlines the Red Wings' offense alongside captain Dylan Larkin (14 goals, 29 points) and Alex DeBrincat (12 goals, 26 points). Canucks president Jim Rutherford has emphasized he seeks established players over just picks and prospects, potentially including prospect Axel Sandin-Pellikka in return.

The New Jersey Devils emerge as a frequent destination, given Hughes' brothers Jack and Luke play there. Speculation includes Jesper Bratt, who hit 88 points in 2024-25 and is on pace for another 70-plus point season, plus Simon Nemec (six goals, 15 points in 25 games, on pace for 20 goals and 50 points), and draft picks. On the Kyper and Bourne podcast, hosts agreed the Devils would need to add more to secure the deal. Rutherford has not backed off comments linking Hughes to New Jersey.

A less likely proposal features the Toronto Maple Leafs offering Matthew Knies. TSN's Bryan Hayes stated, “If the Maple Leafs are rocking and it’s going to cost you Matthew Knies, I’m doing it.” Knies is a core piece, but experts doubt it suffices without stars like Auston Matthews or William Nylander.

Broader rumors touch other Canucks, like pending UFA Kiefer Sherwood (12 goals, $1.5 million cap hit), drawing interest from the Boston Bruins, New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings. Filip Hronek, with a $7.25 million AAV and full no-movement clause, is unlikely to move. Any Hughes trade could define the franchise, but no deal is imminent as the Canucks aim to re-sign him long-term.
